Teddy Bear Dwarf Sunflowers, 2022

An apparently uncommon species of sunflower. One of the full-timers at my current job had some leftover seedlings from one of the family programs that happened that day, so I took a couple home and planted them in my folks' front yard. According to her fact sheet, teddy bear dwarf sunflowers are "an attractive, double-flowered ornamental with yellow to light orange blooms on compact three-foot plants."

Since the weather has been fairly rainy around here lately, I haven't had to water them at all, but that also means I haven't routinely checked them at all. Still, I've managed to get pictures of them every two weeks, so this page will probably get another once another couple have passed.

A gallery devoted to sunflowers legally obligates me to plug my favorite song from my favorite artist and you to listen to it while browsing.

July 9

The morning I planted the seeds in the ground. The seedlings were originally kept in handmade newspaper pots—there's a fair bit of how-to guides for making them out there so you can just search the net and follow whatever catches your fancy.

The far right one is drooping for a lack of water. I don't remember where I planted it, but this might've portended for how quickly it may be growing...

2 inches wide and 2 inches deep for 2 pairs of seedlings.

July 22

Both of these are of the left/forward-facing plant.

August 6

Lots of growth here, especially with the left plant! From what I can tell shade from the house falls over the right a fair bit earlier than the left so the disparity was bound to happen.

If you look closely you can actually see some gritty dust on the leaves. Not sure how this manages to build up.

August 28

Holy moley are they growing—though I did skip a week, since I didn't like the last batch of photos I took due to all the dust caking them after some yardwork. I'm pretty sure the sunflowers are about to bloom proper soon, though I'm a little worried they might not make it in time. Climate change might be keeping everything warm for longer, but summer will be gone before long...

You'd think the smaller one would be the same size as the other pair since a leaf from the bigger one hangs right above it, yet its kept up quite well.

Blurry image that I didn't notice until I was formatting this section, and I'm too lazy to retake it ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ

September 12

They have bloomed!!! This is where I would put a pithy quote about the miracles of life if I could remember one, but it is kinda amazing to compare how tiny they were before to now...

Yeah...the size difference is painfully obvious.

"Gee, how come mama lets you have two flowers?"

They may be tiny, but they are persevering!

Bonus pics of the little bug featured in the fifth of this set which...supposedly shouldn't be there. It's a diabrotica undecimpunctata or spotted cucumber beetle, known to feed on flowers. Haven't found any signs of any nibbled petals since, but I'm still keeping an eye out.
